bitchat beside the messengers you already have

bitchat does not win a feature checklist against WhatsApp. It answers a different question: who can still talk when the usual network is missing, overloaded, or not trusted. Use this page to pick a tool, not to rank brands.

Where bitchat earns a place on the phone

A concert, a campus lawn, a train with dead data, a village fare, a newsroom floor with overloaded Wi-Fi. The people you need are physically close, and the network is the thing that failed. In that room a mesh is not a novelty. It is the only channel that still matches the geography.

It also earns a place when you want a conversation that was never tied to a phone number. There is no address book upload, because there is no account to attach the book to. The cost of that choice is discoverability. You find people by being near them, or by meeting in a geohash room whose code you already know. You do not search a global directory of real names.

Where it is the wrong tool

Family abroad, a delivery driver, a bank alert, a two-factor code, a conversation you need to search next year from a new phone. WhatsApp and SMS are built for reach and for the fact that the other person already has them. bitchat on one phone and WhatsApp on the other is not a conversation. Both people need the same app for the mesh, just as both people need WhatsApp for a WhatsApp chat.

Large files, broadcast channels with millions of subscribers, and business inboxes are also outside the design. Version 2.0.1 can move images, files, and voice inside the mesh and the watch app. That is still a side channel, not a media platform.

Encryption is not the comparison people think it is

WhatsApp’s normal chats are end-to-end encrypted and tied to a phone number that the company knows. Telegram’s default cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted. bitchat’s mesh DMs use Noise so relays cannot read them, and the app never asked for the phone number. Those are different tradeoffs. “More encrypted” is not a serious sentence. “Encrypted, and also not attached to my number, and also useless beyond radio range” is a serious sentence.

Read what the mesh still reveals before you move a sensitive conversation off a tool you already understand.

A sane setup

Keep the messenger your people already answer. Add bitchat for the hour the network disappears. Install the signed APK once, check the hash once, and leave Bluetooth permission granted. The app is a poor daily driver for most families and a good second app for the same families. That is a compliment. Tools that try to be both usually fail at the offline half.
