Check the file before you install it

A download page can be copied. The hash cannot, unless the attacker also replaces this page. Treat a mismatch as a stop, not as a warning to click through.

Download one APK. Leave the file name as it is.
On macOS or Linux, open a terminal in the download folder and run shasum -a 256 plus the file name, or sha256sum on Linux.
On Windows, PowerShell can run Get-FileHash .\file.apk -Algorithm SHA256.
Compare the result with the hash on this page and with the BITCHAT_SHA256SUMS file on the GitHub release. Every character has to match.

The upstream project also publishes a path for people who want to rebuild the app and compare it with the attested unsigned manifest. That work needs Git, the GitHub CLI, and Docker. The release notes on GitHub are the instructions that matter. This site does not rebuild the app. It mirrors the already signed files.

What the phone needs

Requirement	Detail
Android	Android 8.0 (API 26) or newer. The repository’s build notes target API 26.
Radio	Bluetooth Low Energy for the offline mesh. Wi-Fi Aware is used only on phones that support it.
Space	The universal APK is 49.5 MB to download. Installed size is larger. Free a little extra room before you start.
Account	None. The app does not ask for a phone number to create a login.
Internet	Needed for this download, for geohash rooms, and for Nostr. Not needed for a local Bluetooth conversation.
Watch	Wear OS, plus the watch APK. Do not install that file on the phone.

Play Store and App Store

The Android package published to Google Play is com.bitchat.droid. The iOS app is listed as bitchat mesh. Availability changes by country. A missing store page is not, by itself, a reason to install a random file from a forum or a chat group. Use this mirror only when the hash matches, or download the same release from GitHub.

What this page does not host

Play upload bundles (AAB files) are signed for Google Play and are not meant to be installed by hand. Debug builds are not here either. Modified, “premium”, or repacked APKs are not bitchat, even when they use the name. If a file’s hash is not on this page, do not install it from a link that claims to be us.
